Top Tips for Getting the Best Wedding Film
Little things that make a big difference on the day.
So—you’ve booked your wedding videographer (hopefully me! 😉), and now you’re wondering: How can we make sure our film turns out amazing?
Good news: it’s not about posing or performing. In fact, the best wedding films are full of real, natural moments. That said, a few simple tips can make a big difference to how your day feels—and how it looks on camera.
Here are my top tips for getting a wedding film you’ll absolutely love:
1. Get Ready Somewhere with Good Light
Natural light makes everything look better—especially skin tones and soft, moody shots. Try to get ready near a window and, if possible, keep the space tidy-ish (no piles of bags or takeaway wrappers in the background). You’ll thank yourself later!
2. Consider an ‘Unplugged’ Ceremony
Guests holding phones and iPads can block key moments (and faces). Ask your celebrant to make a quick announcement beforehand, and you’ll end up with much cleaner, more emotional footage—and your guests will be more present, too.
3. Write Personal Vows or Letters
If you’re comfortable, personal vows or private letters read during prep make your film feel so much more you. These emotional, intimate words are gold for storytelling—and hearing your own voice in the final edit adds a whole new layer of meaning.
4. Build in Time for Golden Hour
If the sun is out, that soft golden light just before sunset is magic. Talk to your photographer and videographer about slipping away for 10–15 minutes at golden hour. The light, the quiet, the chance to breathe—it’s often couples’ favourite part of the day.
5. Trust Your Suppliers
The best wedding films happen when couples feel relaxed. Choose suppliers you click with, then let them do their thing. I’ll guide you gently when needed—but most of the time, I’ll be capturing things quietly in the background, as they unfold naturally.
6. Be Present (The Film Will Follow)
You don’t need to be “on” all day. Just be yourselves. Laugh, cry, hug your people, dance like no one’s watching. The most beautiful footage always comes from genuine moments—not from trying to act a certain way for the camera.
7. Let the Emotions In
Your wedding day will be full of feeling—don’t hold back. Happy tears, laughs, quiet moments—they all tell your story. And when those emotions show up naturally, your film becomes something truly meaningful.
Final Thought: It’s Your Day
Every wedding is different. Whether it’s a windy mountain elopement or a big party in a castle, the best films reflect you. These tips are just here to help you feel calm, confident, and ready to soak it all in.
And when the confetti’s settled and the dress is packed away, you’ll have a film that brings it all back—the looks, the words, the laughter, the love.
